PRAYAGRAJ: The Dhoomanganj police filed its first charge sheet in the murder of lawyer Umesh Pal and his two police gunners against Sadaqat Khan, naming him as a conspirator, at a local court here on Friday. “As the judicial custody period, known as ‘nyayik abhiraksha awadhi of 90 days is ending on May 27, 2023, we submitted a 1,857-page (including attachments) charge sheet against Sadaqat Khan in connection with the case registered under section 147, 148, 149, 302, 307, 506, 34 and 120B of IPC, section 3 of Explosive Act, 7 CLA Act and 3 (2) V SC/ST Act,” said a police officer.
The Dhoomanganj police had added section 3 (2)V of SC/ST Act on May 23, 2023, in the FIR (no. 114/2023) related to the Umesh Pal murder case and investigations have been handed over to the additional commissioner of police. A team of investigators has also been constituted under the additional commissioner of police.
Police sources said Dhoomanganj police submitted the charge sheet against Sadaqat Khan, one of the nine accused in the case lodged at different jails, on Friday. The investigations are underway in connection with other accused. Sadaqat is one of the prime conspirators involved in the killing of Umesh Pal and was arrested by a team of Special Task Force on February 27.
Police sources also claimed that days before Umesh Pal was killed on February 24, the conspirators and assailants had met slain gangster Atiq Ahmed’s brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf inside Bareilly jail. A 2.12-minute video, dated February 11, purportedly showed nine people, including Mohammed Asad (son of Atiq), Mohammed Ghulam, Guddu Muslim, Vijay Chaudhary alias Usman, Sadakat and others emerging from the Bareilly jail. They had reportedly entered the premises on a single ID and stayed inside the prison campus for around three hours.
Police sources also claimed the meeting was convened to give final touches to the criminal conspiracy to murder Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case. Besides, Sadakat had also attended online and offline meetings with other conspirators.
Two of the Umesh Pal murder case accused – Arbaaz and Vijay Chaudhary alias Usman – were killed in separate police encounters in February last week and March first week, respectively. On April 13, two of the assailants – Mohd Asad and Ghulam – were also killed in a police encounter in Jhansi.
Gangster brothers Atiq and Ashraf were shot dead by a group of assailants inside the campus of Colvin Hospital under the limits of Shahganj police station here on April 15.
