NOIDA: Seven people were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly placing bets on the ongoing cricket matches of the Indian Premier League.
According to cops, the accused are Sachin, Aditya, Nitish Jain, Jaidev Pandey, Prabhakar Pandey, Indu Kumar and Abhinav – all residents of Noida. They had placed bets on the match on the Mumbai Indians versus Lucknow Super Giants game on Wednesday.
Shakti Avasthy, additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP), said, “We got a tip-off about a betting syndicate, following which intelligence and electronic surveillance was used and the accused were found at a house in Gijhore village by Sector 24 police team. They were placing bets on Wednesday’s match between Mumbai Indians and Lucknow SuperGiants teams.”
Cash worth Rs 4 lakh, 15 mobile phones and four laptops were recovered from the accused’s possession, Avasthy said.
According to cops, the accused used an online betting application and set the rates on instances such as a team surpassing a particular score in some overs, winning or losing of toss before the start of the match, runs to be made in an over, etc.
An FIR has been registered against the seven men under relevant sections of the Public Gambling Act. They were sent to judicial custody on Thursday after being produced before a magistrate.
