Bharat Bandh 2024 Announced for Tomorrow in Protest Against Supreme Court's SC/ST Reservation Ruling

Bharat Bandh 2024: Nationwide Strike Announced in Protest Against SC/ST Reservation Ruling
The Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti has called for a Bharat Bandh on August 21, 2024, in response to the Supreme Court's recent decision regarding SC/ST reservations. The protest, set to take place tomorrow, has garnered support from SC/ST groups across Rajasthan and is expected to draw attention nationwide.

Support and Security Measures

In anticipation of the bandh, police forces across all districts have been directed to increase their deployment to prevent any potential unrest. According to a report by The Times of India, Director General of Police (DGP) U.R. Sahoo stated that strict instructions have been given to Superintendents of Police (SPs) to ensure that law and order are maintained during the protest.

DGP Sahoo further mentioned that officials have been advised to hold meetings with the groups organizing the bandh and with local market associations. The goal is to foster better cooperation and minimize disruptions, ensuring that the bandh proceeds peacefully.

The Reason Behind the Bharat Bandh

The Supreme Court’s recent ruling has stirred controversy by allowing states to create sub-categories within the SC and ST groups. The Court emphasized that those in greater need should receive priority in reservations. This decision has sparked widespread debate and dissatisfaction among various social groups.

The Bharat Bandh aims to challenge this ruling and calls for its reversal. Supporters of the bandh argue that the decision undermines the original intent of reservations and could lead to further marginalization within the SC/ST communities.

Various social and political organizations are expected to join the protest, adding momentum to the demand for a re-evaluation of the Supreme Court's decision.

High Alert and Precautionary Measures

Given the potential for violence, top police officials convened a video conference to discuss preparation strategies. The meeting included divisional commissioners, district magistrates, and senior police officers, who outlined steps to ensure public safety during the bandh.

Western Uttar Pradesh has been identified as a particularly sensitive area, prompting authorities to place the region on high alert. The police are taking extensive measures to maintain order and protect the public.

While it is common for public transport and private offices to be non-operational during such protests, emergency services, including ambulances, will remain functional to ensure that essential needs are met during the bandh.

The nationwide protest is expected to create significant disruptions, drawing attention to the ongoing debate over reservation policies in India.
