Apple Inc. is gearing up for its most significant product launch event of the year on September 10, where the tech giant is expected to unveil the latest versions of its iPhones, Apple Watches, and AirPods, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Although the official date hasn't been announced yet, Apple is reportedly preparing for this launch on the second Tuesday of September. The company traditionally follows this timeline, with the new devices likely hitting store shelves on September 20, as per the company's usual practice.
Apple's representative, based in Cupertino, California, declined to provide any comments on the matter.
This launch is crucial for Apple, particularly in light of the sluggish sales of its smartphones and wearable devices over the past few quarters. Releasing the iPhone 16 on September 20 would allow Apple to record some of the revenue from the device in its current fiscal quarter, which ends in September. Apple is anticipating a 5% increase in sales during this period compared to the previous year.
The majority of the sales, however, are expected in the following quarter, which includes the holiday season. Analysts forecast that revenue during this period will rise by 7% to approximately $128.4 billion.
The upcoming iPhone 16 is rumored to feature larger screens on its Pro models, along with new camera functionalities, including a dedicated button for photography. Additionally, Apple will introduce a suite of artificial intelligence tools branded as Apple Intelligence. Despite these updates, the iPhone 16 is not expected to be drastically different from its predecessor.
In contrast, Apple's wearable devices are set to undergo more significant changes. The Apple Watch Series 10 is expected to be slimmer with larger screens, while the AirPods lineup will see a major overhaul. For the first time, the mid-range AirPods will offer noise cancellation, and the entry-level model, which hasn’t been updated since 2019, will receive a refresh.
Apple is also preparing to transition its Mac lineup to the M4 processors later this year. However, these updates typically come about a month after the iPhone launch.
To ensure smooth performance with third-party applications, Apple has intensified testing of four new Mac models featuring the M4 chip, as seen in developer test logs reviewed by Bloomberg News. These Macs are identified as “16,1,” “16,2,” “16,3,” and “16,10.”
All the models are equipped with base-level versions of the M4 chip, with three of them featuring 10-core CPUs and GPUs. The fourth model has a lower-end version with an eight-core CPU and GPU. Memory configurations range from 16 to 32 gigabytes.
The 10-core CPU matches the specifications of the M4 processor found in the iPad Pro, consisting of four high-performance cores and six efficiency cores. The fourth chip, with eight total cores, includes four high-performance and four efficiency cores.
Bloomberg News has also indicated that a new Mac mini, updated MacBook Pros, and iMacs with M4 chips are expected to be released later this year.
